Collects for Passiontide

PASSION SUNDAY

Father in heaven, with an unfathomable love for the people of our world, your beloved Son handed himself over to death. May the same love that inspired his sacrifice abide in us and be woven into every aspect of our lives. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

PASSION MONDAY

Almighty Father, grant that we, who so frequently fall short of your glory because of our sinfulness, may find ourselves restored and strengthened through the Passion of your only-begotten Son, Jesus the Christ, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

PASSION TUESDAY

Gracious Father, grant us the grace to contemplate the mysteries of the Passion of your Son, that we may find therein the assurance of your mercy. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

PASSION WEDNESDAY

Father, through your compassion grant that we may be pardoned and restored to fellowship with you, through the merits and mercies of the Passion of your only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

PASSION THURSDAY

Matins

The root of holiness, Father, is to love you with our whole heart, and to love our neighbor as ourselves. In his final hours, your beloved Son bore witness to this truth with every aspect of his being. Increase your gifts of divine grace in each of us in these holy days. May our meditation on his passion and death fill us with the promise of your mercy, and allow us to rejoice in knowing that the promise of the resurrection is ours as well. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Mass

Loving Father, with simple gifts of wheat and grape, and in the humble act of washing feet, your beloved Son left us an eternal covenant and a new commandment; both rooted in your mercy and love. Grant that we may draw from the saving mystery of our faith, an assurance of your mercy, and hearts dedicated to serve you and others in the power of your love. We ask this through Jesus Christ, our Passover and our Peace, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Vespers

With joy, O Father, your holy people contemplate the mysteries of our redemption, as your Son manifests the Gospel in his own flesh and blood. Stir our hearts by the example of such a Savior - the One who welcomed to his table even those who would betray, deny, and desert him, the One who knew their weaknesses, yet stooped to wash their feet: Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

PASSION FRIDAY

Matins

Father Most High, on this sacred day a world prostrate beneath its sins lifts its eyes to the cross, rejoicing that the Tree of Knowledge, which brought the human race to its knees, stands defeated by the Cross, the Tree of Life, lifting us to redemption. Let the glorious cross forever stand as the sign of our worth in your eyes; and, as we behold Innocence itself crucified in place of the guilty, and Life put to death for sinners, may we take heart, remembering the prayer of the dying thief whose faith was rewarded. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Passion Liturgy

Most merciful Father, we see the cost of our sin and the depth of your love as we contemplate your beloved Son’s death upon the cross. Grant us the grace to consecrate all that we have and all that we are to you, in union with the eternal sacrifice of Jesus Christ, our Passover and our Peace, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever. Amen.

Vespers

Father, you awoke in your Son, Jesus of Nazareth, the desire to be human, without power or prestige in this world. He experienced in his person the full cost of such a life, dying like a slave on the hard wood of the cross. Let us, we beg you, recognize in him your power and your wisdom, and give us faith in your power to bring even the dead to life again. We ask this in his most holy Name. Amen.

PASSION SATURDAY

Matins

Father, for whom the whole creation lives and in whose hands are the depths of the earth and the heights of the mountains, the crucified body of your beloved Son was laid in a new tomb hewn from the rock in a garden, and rested on this holy Sabbath day. As your Church awaits with Christ the dawning of the third day and the beginning of your new creation, grant that all who are buried with Christ in the waters of baptism may rise with him to new life and find their perfect rest in the glorious kingdom that Christ has established through her power of the Paschal Mystery. This we ask in his most holy Name. Amen.

Vespers

Father, source of all life, your only-begotten Son descended to the realm of the dead, so that from even the abode of exile and shadows you might raise him to new life and to glory at your side. Let all who in faith descend into the waters of baptism find the font of the Church to be both the tomb in which they die to sin, and the womb from which they rise to rebirth. We ask this through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
