HOW TO PRAY THE DAILY OFFICE

Following the custom of the Didache, and with an awareness that our people are engaged in ministry in a wide variety of areas, the Ordinariate form for the Daily Office includes three fixed hours of prayer.

Matins - The Office of Morning Prayer
Diurnium - The Office of Daytime Prayer
Vespers - The Office of Evening Prayer

These three Offices may be observed in the following ways:

SCHEMA 1:    Traditional

Matins - Offered between rising and 10 AM.
Diurnium - Offered at the midday meal break.
Vespers - Offered between 5 PM and retiring.

SCHEMA 2:    Contemporary

Matins - Offered at between rising and the beginning of the workday.
Diurnium - Offered at the conclusion of the workday.
Vespers - Offered between sunset and retiring.

Those working evening or night shifts whose sleep/wake patterns do not coincide with these rhythms are encouraged to set aside scrupulosity and arrange the Offices in a way that is pastorally appropriate for their needs.

At this time, the user controls most of the hyperlinked variations for days and seasons. Only the Daily Lectionary readings are currently controlled by the host site, Bible Gateway, which takes into account the local time from your IP address to pull the day's readings.

If you wish to add additional devotions to your day, you may wish to select one of the following books:

These books typically include a brief Scripture, reflection, and prayer.

You would then use these for brief prayer stops along the path of your day, including:

Prime - Upon waking
Terce - Between 9 AM and 11 AM
Sext - Between 11 AM and 2 PM
None - Between 2 PM and 4 PM
Lucernarium - At Sunset or at the Dinner Table

For those seeking a beautiful conclusion to the day in prayer, we also recommend the various Complines of the Northumbria Community, found in Celtic Daily Prayer. These texts are freely available on their website.
